The story of Herschel Levine

From a family of small-business owners in New Haven to the operations desk of a growing group of companies.

New Haven roots
Born in New Haven, Connecticut, with a twin sister. His grandfather ran Keystone Exterminating in New Haven; his father, a Providence College graduate, started Keystone Kennels, later an animal hospital.
School and sports
At the private school his father had attended, Herschel captained several sports teams and swam, like his dad.
Art school and glass
He went to art school and spent years blowing glass there.
The early days of Yodle
At 21 he helped his friend Nathaniel Stevens start Yodle. He brought in partners, moved into a small apartment in Philadelphia with the team and went door to door.
Hands-on years
Construction work, bartending, and two years at a senior home during COVID, starting as a dishwasher and moving up to waiter. "I didn't make a lot of money, but I felt like I was helpful."
Stevens Ventures today
Back with Nathaniel Stevens, Herschel works across Stevens Ventures: the point-of-sale company Punchy and, today, the automotive business.

What Herschel Levine does

Today

Operations at Stevens Ventures

Day-to-day operations, hiring and firing, data and technicians, fintech projects, and hands-on work like moving cars on the lot. "A little bit of everything."

Where it started

Helping start Yodle

Nathaniel asked if his idea was any good. Herschel said yes, called their friend Ben, and Ben answered: "Only if you come." So he drove to Philadelphia.

On the road

Israel, Egypt, Jordan, the Sinai, a cross-country drive and, most recently, Quebec City.

Tel Aviv, age 17

A stranger's house key

No money, no phone, no plan. A grandmother sent two teenagers to her daughter's home, and the daughter simply handed over the key.

Cairo

The wrong black bag

After Birthright he crossed into Egypt on foot, rode eight hours to Cairo and found his bag gone. A month there, over New Year's.

Cross-country, age 21

An empty tent at 3 a.m.

No reservation in peak summer. They found an empty tent, climbed in and went to sleep.

Herschel Levine's advice to younger people

"Everybody makes mistakes, and the hardest thing to do is to forgive."

"The best feeling you get in the world is from giving."

"Nothing's permanent. All those feelings, bad or good, come to an end and start over again."

"Don't believe everything you read."

"Wake up every day and ask: how can I make today a better day for everybody around me?"
